Photos From the Jaguar Wedding

Evelyn,
I couldn't not post these amazing photos of you at your Uncle Jake's wedding yesterday. <3

I'll probably add some more later, too.

2 years, 8 months

Dear Evelyn,
As we approach Autumn, I find myself with the rare moment to write to you. In the last 8 months you have blossomed even more into a big kid. There's so much to write about, yet, will I be able to cover everything?
In February we found out we are expecting a little sibling for you. We started telling you about it immediately to help you prepare for a life after single-childhood. You are ecstatically looking forward to having a tiny baby to hold and care for. You have put your hands on my belly to feel little kicks and spoken sweet words to the developing ears inside. You were the star of the gender reveal party, too:
We are so excited for you to be a big sister to a little sister. You can see I am excited too. :) Here's one more video of you being a great big sister, listening to your little sister's heartbeat:

With the impending addition to our family, we have made many transitions. For one, we moved back to my hometown. For a brief interim, we stayed with Mummum and you absolutely adored that time. You still act like her house is home sometimes. The new apartment is not as exciting as a house, not to mention it's on the third story of the building, so to get up there is a bit of a hike. But it will do, and it is close by our very best friends.
Another transition has been to your own bed. At 2 years old, I said that we would get you into your own bed. I made several half-hearted attempts, but this time we are sticking with it. You have a whole nightly routine now: At 9:30pm we head to the bedroom. You let me brush and floss your teeth, then you gargle and spit. You pick out 2-4 books to read in bed with us, then sit on the potty before snuggling into your own bed. Most nights you are still putting up some fuss, but I think for the most part you are starting to accept that this is the new normal. After all, Mommy's belly is getting bigger and so are you. Our bed was really running out of space! Poor Daddy was finding himself being shoved off the bed a bit too much.
Since you have been going to bed so much earlier than before, you're not needing as many naps. This has coincided with H not taking any naps anymore either, so that means I'm one exhausted pregnant mama. I miss the days when we could snuggle to sleep in the spare room while H napped. But in exchange, I do get more time with you awake during the day! You still sometimes nap in the car and if I'm lucky you'll nurse to sleep in my lap while H plays in her playroom. I've learned not to let you nap past 2pm or bedtime will not go smoothly.
Potty training has been a lot of ups and downs. We had like a solid 3 weeks of so many accidents I didn't think your clothes would ever not smell like pee. I had to relearn how to do laundry to get the smell out. Then you had like a few weeks of doing really well. You weren't really telling us much when you had to go, but we had kind of figured out your habits and could catch you before you would have an accident. You like to hide under the table to poop. Your tell is that you yell, "go away!" at us. That's when we know we're already too late, but we still rush you to the potty anyway. :P You were having a really good couple of weeks up until this week, when you regressed. Not entirely sure why, but there were a few really frustrating days that involved you going pantsless and then shirtless when you somehow managed to pee....up? and we had run out of clean clothes in the bag. The last 24 hours have been really successful though. We basically started over with a potty timer set for every 30-40 minutes and even though its exhausting, its better than toting pee-soaked bags of clothes around. I hope this time it sticks because tomorrow is the first day of our vacation!
We are going to be driving to Norfolk, VA to stay with Aunt Rora for a few days and spend some time in the sand and sea. We've all been looking forward to this for a few months now, but it is a bit bittersweet, too. When we come back after vacation we will have a mere 10 days left with H. She's heading off to preschool and you'll be without the "big sister" that you have come to love and be close to for the last almost 2 years of your life. I'm worried about how that transition will go. You may miss her a lot. H was really looking forward to the baby, too, but I understand why her parents have chosen to put her in preschool instead of keep me on. I was able to find a new family fairly quickly, too, so you may be just fine since you won't be too lonely. The new family has a little girl 3 weeks younger than you and a baby who will be a few months older than your little sister! And since it will only be a couple days a week, you'll have lots of time with Mommy and eventually your baby sister.
One more big thing happening is that your Aunt Kat is coming to live with us. Just for a few months, maybe just until the baby is born. Your room is going to be her room since you still sleep in our room, just on your own bed. This should be a fun transition!
I haven't really hit on many of your milestones, but at this point I'm not sure what counts as them. You've picked up the habit of repeating swear words you hear on TV shows or Daddy's videogames. And yeah, sometimes you're just parroting me. You heard me say, "seriously!?" in a moment of road rage and proceeded to repeat it to me the rest of the car ride. And in case I wasn't getting it, you asked me to ask you if you were copying me. And then you said yes. Ha. Snarky little kid, you are.
You are becoming more independent each day. Sometimes you want to dress yourself, pick your own clothes out, decide what hairstyle you'll tolerate and what shoes you will wear. You pipe up if you disagree with the day's plan, or if you don't want what we're having for dinner. You have started helping out a lot around the house. You can feed the dogs, wash some dishes, cut vegetables with assistance, pour sauces on the meal before it goes in the oven, put away your clothes, pick up your toys and in exchange for being allowed to turn the dryer on, you will pull the clothes out and put them in a basket for me to fold. You can wash your own hands and body, too.
Physically speaking, you have exploded with skill. You can confidently climb most of the structures at the playground and sometimes get down unassisted as well. You've crossed a rope bridge once while I hung out below waiting for you to fall, but you didn't! You're jumping from heights that make me nervous and dancing around and around:

In September you will be starting ballet class. It's more of a toddler dance program, but to you it is Ballerina Class. You have a pair of ballet slippers that you have been hard-pressed to take off at times. I'm still on the hunt for a tutu and leotard to put you in so you can feel the full experience. And if you love it, when you turn three you can go into an actual ballet program where you can put on a performance at the end.
Your interests are starting to broaden. You love swimming and get pretty envious that H goes to a real swim class. As mentioned above, dancing is a favorite pastime. You love playing with baby dolls and reading books is still high on the list of things to do. You enjoy legos and building towers and forts from blankets and pillows. You prefer the playground over pretty much any other outing, but you're still game for museums. You just recently braved the carousel at the park after a long time of being too scared. I have had lots of opportunities to be proud of you.
You had your first and second dentist appointments this year and two doctor visits as well. The first dentist visit put you on edge. We tried to discuss it ahead of time, but you weren't quite to the point of understanding and you ended up in tears. The second time, however, you told me on the way in that you did not want to cry, you wanted to be brave. And brave you were! You let them lay you back, opened your mouth and allowed them to clean your teeth, floss and then at the end you even thanked them, no pressing from me! The two doctor visits were like night and day, too. You had a really anti-doctor phase from about a year old on and it lasted at your 2 year appointment too. But at your 2.5 year appointment you told me again how brave you wanted to be and that you didn't want to cry. You marched into the office, told the doctor what he could do (listen to your heartbeat, look in your ears, feel your belly, etc) and then showed him how you could jump. He gave you a sticker for your bravery. I have to admit that I was near tears myself leaving the offices those days. You impressed the hell out of me! What a difference 6 months made!
You have a few favorite people in your life right now, which deserve mentioning: Granny Apple, who will spoil you rotten if given the chance, Mummum, who would do the same but mostly enjoys watching you play, Gramma and Grumpa Maxfield, who have been seeing you much more often this year, it feels like and of course your best Uncle Johnny, who loves you to the moon and back. The rest of the family is important, of course, but those are the people you ask to see most regularly. :)
As always, I know there is so much more to share here, but without the time or the presence of mind to do so, I'll leave it as it is. Here are a few photos of you:

2 Years Old

Evie,
Yesterday was your second birthday. We got to sleep in because you are like no other kid I know and you do not wake me up before the crack of dawn. When we did wake up, I gave you your gifts and we sat in the living room watching you unwrap them. You were excited for the toys, not so much for the clothing. I have to laugh at that. Such typical kid behavior. Your first and only request for activities for the day was to go to the playground. Yeah, it was chilly and overcast, but we bundled up and took you down to the park. You swung on the swings, wandered around the grounds and we found a bridge to stand on and look down at the water, a shelter where you checked out the fireplace and a big magnolia tree where you stood with Daddy for a picture.
After the playground, you fell asleep in the car and slept on Daddy's shoulder while we grocery shopped. You didn't wake up for the snacks or the stickers. We must have tired you out! When we got home you played with your toys and after a couple hours we went to pick Mummum up to bring her to your birthday party at Granny's house.
Your party was so much fun! Granny made you an amazing cake with Anna and Elsa dolls and you got a bunch of really cool presents, mostly Frozen-themed, that you adore. Seriously, you haven't stopped pressing their various play buttons since we got home. I joked that we'd take your singing Frozen balloon outside for you to "Let It Go". But it makes you happy, so I'll deal. Granny, Pawpaw, Nana, Grandad, Uncle Johnny, Uncle Ethan, Aunt Emma, Mummum, Daddy and I were all there for your party. You spent a little time with everyone and had a great time. You fell asleep on the way home from dropping Mummum off.
We heard a bunch of fireworks outside from New Year's celebrations. I pretended they were for you. You didn't seem to notice or care yet. Still, you stayed up very late and finally around 1:00 am you asked to nurse and promptly fell asleep. I carried you to your bed where you slept for most of the night! I hope your birthday was all you could ever dream and more. I look forward to celebrating many years to come.
Love,
Mommy

*~*~*~*~*~*

Evie at 2 Years
At 2, you are able to hold up a pretty good conversation. Little things, like coming up with your own responses vs parroting responses you've heard, amaze me. I may be easily impressed, but you have such quick wit sometimes, for being so young.
Your humor is astounding, too. You crack jokes, know just what to say to de-escalate a tense situation, and you're quick to tell me your opinion on matters. Most of the time, these matters do not need your input, but we consider it anyway.
You are obsessed with all things Frozen. I thank H for that, but I have to take some of the blame. I let you watch the video to Let It Go way too many times on the ride home from work. May this be a short-lived phase. While we're at it, may you finally gain interest in your wooden toys.
You haven't quite gotten the hang of potty training, but that's okay. We haven't gotten the hang of constantly reminding you to go potty anyway. I have hopes that this will be the year, though, that we get you into big kid panties.
You haven't gotten picky about outfits yet, which means I get to match ours quite often. We could probably match every day of the week, but I won't subject you to it that often. ;)
Your favorite activities are coloring and leaving the caps off markers, chasing and hugging the animals, reading books and singing. You have a real love of books and that makes me so happy. I try never to turn you down when you ask to read something.
This year we will be working on putting you in your own bed for the night (again). Eventually you're bound to take to it!
You have slowed down nursing somewhat, but I don't think we're done yet. I'll attribute it to the holidays and even though I'm very ready to be done physically, emotionally I haven't quite gotten there and I know you are far from done emotionally too.
In 2016 you had a lot of firsts. Your first haircut was one of them. I trimmed your bangs and I didn't cry (much)! You look super cute with bangs but I can't bring myself to do it to the rest of your hair.
So many cute moments I wish I'd documented immediately, but I'm sure they'll pop into my head as you get older and I yearn for your innocent comments. Just tonight you caught me scratching one of my fresh tattoos and you chided me, "Mama, dont pick!"
I am so glad you are so well-behaved, but I know we may have some trying moments in the next year (or 20, or 40). I hope you know that I love you always and no matter what, we will be there for you.

Evie Darling

I haven't forgotten about this blog. I have been incredibly busy and watching you grow up before my eyes is so amazing, but also traumatizing, to say the least. You're so big now. On Saturday you will be 2 and I just may lose it. But I will write a full post then. For now, just know that I love you to death and you absolutely must slow down with all of this development!!!

Closing out the Summer, Welcoming Fall

My Sweet Evelyn,
The last couple months have been a blur of growth, development and excitement. You have truly blossomed into a little kid now. You're opinionated, have desires and know how to make requests. You have taken to many new activities with such ease that I can't help but swoon. I fall more in love with you every day!
Here are some highlights, not in order because I didn't keep it all tracked anywhere:
You got your own pool, which you laid in a few times and kicked your feet and splashed around and squealed with delight. We had spent enough time at the lake to know you loved water and we figured having a bit to play in at home outside the bathtub would be nice. :)
You've begun to hold your hand out and say, "hand" and then once I take it you lead me around to whatever you want to do. Sometimes you don't take me anywhere, sometimes you lead Daddy to pretzels.
Speaking of food, you've become increasingly picky. Some days I can't get you to eat anything, but then after a few of those in a row, you relent and eat a whole solid meal. You're really working my mom worry when you do that! Your favorite foods right now are chicken, blueberry breakfast bars, fries, pretzels, broccoli, carrots, fruit leather, cheese sticks, popcorn, watermelon. You sometimes will completely snub those too.
You've taken a liking to drawing. The tub walls have become a popular place to doodle with soap crayons, but upon request of Uncle Justin, we have supplied you with a couple canvases to draw on with all of the writing utensils you can handle. Daddy also found you a chalkboard and dry erase board easel to draw on when you're feeling less focused. Your masterpieces are beautiful.
We tie dyed a few shirts and onesies one night and you managed to dump the whole bucket of dye all over the floor when we were done. Some quick thinking saved the wood, but our towels are straight out of Woodstock now. No matter! We had a good time.
You were also in the second accident of your life. Mommy had a blowout tire on a back road and spun out, half flipping into a tree. You were unharmed, thank goodness but that was scary! You had your first ambulance ride and impressed the paramedics with your ability to completely calm down once Mommy put your favorite show on on her phone.
Since our car was totaled we ended up getting a new one, which you promptly vomited in and have since made every effort to leave your mark whether it be squished strawberries, spilled milk or whatever. I don't mind, we got the leather seats for a reason! Your new car seat also got a spill of chocolate milk in it before leaving the parking lot of the store we bought it from. :P
Your physical therapist prescribed the use of Kinesio tape for your ankle/foot but it's not turning out very well. You're a little too active for it to stay on as many days as they want you to wear it. You think it's a sticker though, so you're pretty okay with having it on.
With H in tow, we've been exploring more and more playgrounds. We found one right by H's house to visit when the sun doesn't beat down so hard. The splash pad near Julia's house was fun, but you're not a big fan of spraying water or being sprayed by water. You loved the sheep at the bottom of the hill, though!
You've been spending a lot of time with Granny and Papa during the times when Mommy has work at night. They are over the moon for you and take you to feed goats and cows and walk the doggies. You love the swing at their house and you play with the kitties there too.
We've really started the process of potty training now, asking you pretty frequently if you'd like to sit on the potty. Sometimes you will be compliant and go, other times not so much, but you ARE making progress. This morning you TOLD me you had to poop! You still didn't actually poop, but I'm hoping that means you've recognized what the idea is.
The stage of development where you get indecisive has apparently come about because you wanted to switch swings several times at the park last week. A butterfly landed on you that day too.
You really enjoy dancing with Daddy to records. You stand on his feet, hold his hands and dance away, giggling and screeching mirthful sounds.
Last night at Old Navy you found a pair of kitten shoes (which we had in a smaller size once upon a time, but you refused to wear them) and promptly sat down, pulled your shoes and socks off and put them on. They were way too big, but you refused to take them off! It was quite cute, really.
We have gotten you to sleep in your bed for at least a couple hours each night but some nights we forego the crib completely and let you sleep with us because, lets be real, it's wonderful having you so close. You don't seem to mind.
Here are some photos from the last couple months:

A letter to Evie about sleeping

Sweet Evie,
Right now you are in your bedroom with Daddy, crying your eyes out because you do not want to sleep in the crib. My heart breaks so much hearing you cry out for me, but I can't go soothe you because you do not really want to be soothed, you want to get out of the crib and sleep in our bed. And to be perfectly honest I can't think of a really good reason I shouldn't just let you, but I know that we just moved the whole house around just for you to have your own room, so I'd prefer if you did use it. It's just naptime. At bedtime we'll put you in the crib too, but if you should wake at 4:30am like you did last night I will happily bring you to our room, into our bed, where you can snuggle up warm between me and Daddy and finish off the night. And we will do that every night as long as you let us get some sleep first. Hopefully, eventually you will start to prefer your room and instead of the crib you can have a toddler bed or even a regular bed.
I was definitely lonely for those few hours before you woke up and came to our bed last night, I will admit. I wasn't sure what to do with the 60% of the bed that you left behind. I kind of felt around a little bit every few minutes, hoping to feel your soft little fingers or hair. And this morning Daddy even admitted to being cold and lost in the abundance of space on his side of the bed. We didn't even snuggle last night. I think we hadn't accepted that you weren't there yet. He likened it to when we kicked the dogs out of the bed for good. It took him weeks to start utilizing the foot room. We'll get there.
You are finally quiet in there with Daddy, I hope that means you are asleep. Sweet dreams, little one. I am sorry for being the mean Mommy and making you sleep in your room.

Summer Update

In the last 4 months we have had so many big new things happen! We moved to Durham, Evie perfected walking and has begun talking with fervor! She has too many words to even quantify right now, but safe to say she can have a pretty good conversation and even uses some sentences. She loves to talk on the phone, but you might not understand what she's saying. She copies Plate Girl from her favorite show when she asks "Hello Sarah, what are you doing?" It's quite adorable, though a little hard to understand. We're still working on annunciation, but she's getting there.
She recognizes and points out animals and can tell me what noises they make. Our new bathtime activity involves me drawing animals in soap crayon on the tub walls while she guesses what they are tells me how they sound. Sometimes she gets it wrong, but we are working on it and switching out the animals every few baths. When she gets them all right I'll switch to letters and numbers and eventually words! I saw the idea online and I love it!
She likes to color, watch Sarah & Duck and hang out with her friends. We have made so many new friends in our new neighborhood! They come knocking on our door at all hours, but if Evie hears them she runs to the door and screams "hello!" until we open the door. And heaven forbid we don't let her at least say hi, because she will melt down. Most of the time we let her to go out and swing with them or have them come in and play with her in the playroom. They are all ages, too. From 4 to 12! They don't mind that she's just a little kid, though. She does pretty well at holding her own with them. She especially loves to show off all of her toys and share our food.
We've been doing a lot of outings lately with H, including all of the museums in the area. There's one called Notasium where there is a big slide. Evie didn't really enjoy going down it but she was more than happy to stand at the bottom and cheer on the other kids, clapping her hands and yelling "YOU DID IT!" when they'd get to the bottom. She makes my heart full.
We took a trip with Julia in April to Myrtle Beach. Evie was excited to go out to the sand, played in the pool, and had a blast at the kids museum. The aquarium was kind of a bust because it was expensive and not very good, but we had fun regardless.
We also went to visit Allison in Wilmington and found an amazing kids museum there, too. Four stories of kid-focused fun. Salem and Evie found a bucket of water to play in and got super muddy and we didn't even stop them because it looked like they were having so much fun. You don't get to have fun like that often as you get older and it gave me an excuse to buy her a tshirt from the gift shop to wear on the drive home.
I've started a Monday night babysitting job near my mom's house so Evie has been staying with her while I work. I always felt terrible that she didn't spend more time with them but they lived so far away before that it was difficult for me to get out there, especially when I wasn't working at all. I bring her to my mom as soon as I get off from nannying H and I hang out a little while before leaving for my second shift. Evie always looks so happy when I come get her and I'm just so enthralled that they're getting the time together.
Here are some recent pictures:

New vans and her sweet shirt from Cheap Bastards! clothing!

All snuggled up and ready for bed.
Evie's neighborhood friends stopped by in the middle of cleaning day. Needless to say, that cleaning got horribly derailed. :)
Even though it's going to be a hot summer, I think we're going to have a blast. Lots of pool time and splash pad visits in store for us as well as some exploring outside. I can't wait to post again!
